5 Back To School Car Games

kids in car driving to school
It’s a busy time of year as we gear up for sending our kids back to school. Not only is there more traffic on the roads, we notice that our time in the car is longer from drop-off in the morning to afterschool pickup. Entertaining your kids is a BIG deal for any parents, and the same can be true for long car rides. Avoid the “Are we there yet?’ questions, and check out these fun back to school car games that will entertain your kids on the way to and from school.

License Plate Game
This car game is a tried and true classic! We all played it while on family road trips, or when we were stuck in the car in traffic or long commutes to school. This game can be as simple as calling out the name of the state on the license plate or playing bingo for older kids that can manage a pencil and pad of paper in the car. You can find bingo sheets for this game and print them out to keep in your vehicle.

I Spy
This game is great for both the driver and passengers of all ages. Simply “spy” something and then give a hint for the other passengers to guess what you are referring to. “I spy with my little eye, something yellow.” Your kids will eagerly look all around for something yellow and before you know it they’ll be yelling out their guesses, “school bus!”

Spot The Car
A fun game for older kids to enjoy is spot the car. You can make a list of different types of vehicles such as car, truck, SUV, and van. Or, you can make it more challenging and list out specific vehicle brands or makes such as Jeep, Toyota, Ford, BMW, etc. It’s sort of like a car scavenger hunt. You can print up lists to keep in your car or play this game by calling out what you see.

Restaurant Race
For this game, have each passenger school a restaurant or fast-food chain such as Taco Bell, McDonald’s, Taco Cabana, etc. Passengers earn points by spotting their restaurant. They can either spot the restaurant itself or signs, pictures on billboards, or by hearing it mentioned in a radio ad. Whoever earns the most points by the time you reach school or home is the winner.

This is a great game for younger children who are learning how to count. Pick something that your little ones can count: cars, trucks, stop signs, school busses, etc. Have your child yell out what they are counting followed by the number. “5 stop signs!”

Enjoy these back to school car games with your children and have a fun and safe ride to school!
